From the tannery....

Bark Tanned Leather

This is the tannery's main product.
I tan sheep, deer and goat skins, but mostly sheep skins saved from waste from a local abatoir in Blaenau Ffestiniog.

These are dehaired using lime, and then pH altered before tanning with tree bark.

I harvest the bark by hand, from the woods that i manage or from contacts within local forestry.

Once tanned through, these are softened using natural food safe oils and fats.

Ingredients-

Tree bark (could be a mix of any of these- Oak, Sitka Spruce, Willow, Western Hemlock, Douglas Fir, Sweet Chestnut, Larch)
Rapeseed oil
Egg yolk
Tallow

Processing aids-
Hydrated lime
Vinegar
Soap
Salt

Prices are between £30- £50 per square foot depending on thickness and quality of skins.

Brain tanned buckskin

I like to make buckskin from red deer skins due to their large size and softness.

Soft, flowing buckskin suitable for clothing, beading, and baby safe.

These are well smoked and then well washed, but be aware that some smokey smell will remain.

Deer skin
Pig brains (or soya lecethin and rapeseed oil if brains unavailable)

Hydrated lime
Vinegar
